If life with your adolescent dog feels like a constant struggle, you are not alone.

Adolescent dogs are the age group at the highest risk of being surrendered to shelters.

This is a sad reality that reflects a real challenge. Adolescent dogs do not behave like puppies anymore. They are less compliant, less self-regulated, more explorative and more impulsive (to name just a few). And this is definitely not your fault. It is a natural developmental stage that serves a biological purpose.

Unfortunately, there is little knowledge among dog guardians, and most dog professionals, about how to effectively handle this developmental period without “having to sit it out” or resorting to aversive methods and other control-based approaches.

As a result, guardians that care for adolescent dogs feel isolated in their struggle, at their wit’s end, and in desperate need for sustainable solutions.

Human-dog bond

Make adolescence a window of opportunity

Your dog is not being defiant, they have a brain that is literally under construction. Understanding how adolescence affects your dog’s brain, how these changes translate into behaviors, and why they occur, is a game changer.

This knowledge is powerful. It will get you closer to how your dog experiences this particular time in their life. It will allow you to readjust your role as a caregiver, and adapt your expectations so that they suit both, your needs and your dog’s current capacity.

Instead of trying to control a teen dog and increasing the gap between both of you, understanding what is going on, will allow to actually support them in a meaningful way, and build a strong foundation for a lifetime of mutual trust and cooperation.

Why learn about the neuroscience of adolescence?

Evidence-based

Gaining accurate, evidence-based knowledge about this developmental period allows you to cut through the noise and take informed decisions that serve you and your dog.

Empowering

Understanding what is going on eases the constant anxiety that makes you blame yourself or your dog. Instead of being in constant doubt, you will feel more confident with your journey together.

Progressive

Translating your newly gained knowledge into new skills with your dog, is the best investment into the relationship with them. It will foster more connection, trust and cooperation, on the long term.

What's inside

Those are the main topics of the course:

  • Core neuroscience concepts: the basics you need to understand the course
  • Timeline of brain development: why it matters particularly for adolescent dogs
  • The role of cognition: what it is, which processes it includes and how that relates to adolescence
  • Changes in brain architecture during adolescence: deep dive into the neurobiology of an adolescent dog
  • Relationship between those changes and “typical” adolescent behaviors: this is where neuroscience meets our every day life and where all the pieces come together.
  • Vulnerabilities specific to adolescents: important considerations when living and/or working with adolescent dogs.
  • Strategies to support adolescent dogs: Essential skills to build for you and your adolescent dog to thrive.

Frequently Asked Questions

No. The course is designed to support you independently of your current knowledge level. Having some basic knowledge about dog training can help you contextualize better certain information but is not required to understand the course. Likewise, you don’t need prior (neuro)science knowledge. The course explains all necessary science concepts from the beginning.

Both!  If you are a curious dog guardian who wants to better support their adolescent dog, you will greatly benefit from the material. Having said this, it is an information-rich course that dives deep into the neuroscience of the brain – a level of understanding that is mostly sought after by professionals, but accessible to everyone who commits to the learning journey. If you are a professional, this course is going to significantly elevate your practice, as you will be able to transfer this knowledge into your work with adolescent dogs and to your clients.

Not really. This course predominantly deals with the neurobiological changes that give rise to “typical” adolescent behaviors. It explains why those behaviors occur and what their biological purpose is. While there is also a section on how to best support adolescent dogs in your day to day, it would go beyond the scope of the course to elaborate each specific point into a how-to guide. Rather, the last section serves as “compass” that points into the directions that each student needs to follow up proactively on their own. However, if you don’t quite know where to look for additional answers, Alexandra is happy to point you into some of those directions.

Of course! Alexandra is passionate about her work and loves to exchange with her students. You can always drop her an email and she will get back to you quickly.

Lifetime access. As long as the internet exists, the course will be there for you to come back as many times as you wish.
